Ms Marin appeared as the October cover star of Finnish fashion magazine Trendi, and the publication shared a picture of the Helsinki native on its Instagram on October 9.
Some social media users showcased the struggle female politicians continue to face amid rampant sexism and double standards, as comments accused Ms Marin of an ‘inappropriate’ outfit choice.
One comment suggested that Ms Marin’s outfit ‘eroded’ her credibility, while another user wrote [in Finnish]: ‘Yeah a real role model. It would have been better in the darkest of clouds.
‘Ridiculous that the breasts of a woman appear in two without a blouse. Someone with taste and sense of style.’
Many jumped to Ms Marin’s defence, launching the hashtag #imwithsanna and sharing photos of themselves in similar outfits to that worn by the Finnish Prime Minister.
Supporters also praised the photoshoot, with one comment reading: ‘Stylish image. Anyone who condemns an open neck can stop hypocrisy.
‘Our beautiful Prime Minister, who is a good role model for all Finnish woman.’
Another person wrote: ‘Such a wonderful woman who is not afraid to break the dusty hardened patriarchal formulas.’
Trendi captioned the post: ‘Prime Minister Sanna Marin has a leading position as an example, a role model, a changer of things and an influencer.’
